The jawline loses definition for different reasons. Bone and deep fat pads lose volume with age, so the jaw angle softens. The skin and SMAS loosen and start to fold into jowls. Fat accumulates under the chin and along the jaw. And some people simply have a softer jaw structure by nature.
Because the causes differ, two people with the same complaint may need opposite treatments: one needs structure added, the other needs fat reduced and tissue tightened. The consultation is there to tell them apart.

Lack of structure is treated with jawline fillers and dermal fillers in the chin, which add definition at the angle and along the jaw. A wide jaw from muscle bulk is slimmed with anti-wrinkle injections into the masseter.

Fillers add structure where it is missing; devices tighten tissue that has loosened. The doctor decides after assessing which of the two is behind your concern — often it is both.
Early to moderate jowls often respond well to tightening and carefully placed filler. Heavy jowls with excess skin may need a surgical opinion.
Firmer fillers in the jaw and chin usually last longer than softer products elsewhere in the face. The doctor will give you a realistic estimate for the product chosen.
